Happy New Year!
I know many people set their new year’s resolution to get healthier for the coming year but often give up after a month. Maybe they do not follow through because it seems so difficult to make the changes. Maybe they set their goals so high they can not achieve them. Maybe they think that becoming healthier has to be some huge, dramatic change which sets them up for failure even if they do not realize it. How about changing the thoughts behind making changes in your life to simple things that can be achieved without overwhelming yourself. I am going to make some suggestions that are simple to help you on your journey of the new healthy lifestyle you want to live. (Some of these suggestions may seem simple to those who already live a healthy lifestyle, but for some who are new to this journey, I hope these suggestions help you.)
Getting Healthy - Made Simple
EAT BROWN RICE. Just eat brown rice. This whole grain is full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, cancer fighting antioxidants, fiber, and complex carbohydrates. Most people do not eat complex carbs, or do not eat enough of them. Whole grains, complex carbs is what gives your body energy! You need the whole grains or you will be tired. (Sound familiar? If I had a dime for every time I hear someone say, ‘I am tired’, I would be rich.) Even if you are already eating brown rice, I bet you are not eating it three meals a day.
To learn more about the tremendous healing properties of BROWN RICE, listen to one of my recent radio shows, REAL FOOD with Chef Val, where I discussed all the benefits of BROWN RICE. https://www.blogtalkradio.com/macrovalrealfood/2022/12/07/real-food-with-chef-val
EAT MORE VEGTABLES. Yes, it can be that simple, just eat more vegetables. And if you do not like to chop vegetables, then you can purchase frozen organic vegetables. In fact, the frozen organic vegetables can be stored for a lot longer then fresh vegetables. Of course, fresh vegetables are great and yes, eat more of those, however I am attempting to make suggestion to help make it easy to start your year off getting healthier. The simplest way to eat the vegetable is steam them. Any meal is made healthier and more eye appealing with colorful vegetables added.
BUY ORGANIC. Yes, I know you are tired of hearing that, but it can make a HUGE difference in your health. The chemicals that are sprayed on your food crops are wrecking our digestion (just to name one thing they are doing to us). Glyphosate, one of the worse, is known to cause cancer. In the long run, if you invest your money if organic food, you will not have to spend it on treating more serious diseases.
READ THE LABELS. I can not stress this enough! Even people who I counsel and I remind them all the time, still forget to read the labels. Once you start reading the labels you will educate yourself about all the additive, preservatives and just plain bad things in most packaged food. The rule is: The less amount of ingredient in the label the more whole the product will be. The shorter the list of ingredients the better the food is for you to consume.
COOK YOUR OWN FOOD. Food that you cook at home is 1000% better then restaurant food that you purchase. Our culture relies way too much on restaurant food. In the restaurants they use way too much salt, oil and sugar to make the food more tasty to their customers. All of these you can control when cooking at home.
STOP EATING WHITE SUGAR. This needs to be the first thing you stop eating. White sugar is not food, it is a highly refined chemical. It wrecks havoc on every organ in your body. It effects your sleep, your mood, your blood sugar levels, your blood pressure, your cholesterol, your energy, your thoughts and all in a negative way. I know this will be one of the difficult things to do on your list to create a healthier lifestyle, but it is also one of the most important things you will ever do in your life. And white sugar is additive, it reacts in the same neuroreceptors in your brain as cocaine, that is how additive it is and food manufacturers know about this additive property. They put white sugar in their food so you keep coming back for more. Once you stop eating it altogether you will not be tempted to get fooled by the food manufactures who are using it to addict you to their food. You will be able to say, “You have no power over me”, and you will be in control.
Love - Credit - Patience
Love yourself more and do not beat yourself up if you cheat or fall off the wagon. Do not just give up if after the first month you take a step backwards. Just keep (as they say) getting back up on the horse and keep trying. Never give up and give yourself credit for trying. We usually are our own worse critics.
Be patient with yourself. Getting healthy takes some time. Do not give up. I have worked with people who think that all their dis-ease and dis-comfort will change quickly and give up because it does not happen quick enough for them. The body works in a way that it heals what needs to be healed first, then move on to heal the next thing. Keep going and realize it took many years to create the dis-ease or dis-comfort we have and it can not be reversed in just a couple weeks.
