The verdict came down on Tuesday, kill the healthy 400 Canadian Ostriches. The Universal Ostrich Farm in B.C. Canada needs all the help it can get from everyone.
The Universal Ostrich Farm in B.C. Canada is a family run farm, Karen Greba Espersen and her daughter Katie Pasitney. We have been introduced to them through social media and interviews about their beautiful ostriches.

This was the release on Tuesday, May 13th:
Official Announcement: Federal Court Decision in Universal Ostrich Farms Inc. v. Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Dear friends and supporters,
We are absolutely devastated to share today’s Federal Court decision, issued on May 13, 2025. The court ruled in favour of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), upholding their order to destroy our beloved ostriches and rejecting our plea to save them.
The court’s decision accepted the CFIA’s justification under the Health of Animals Act and their use of the Stamping-Out Policy, which mandates the destruction of animals to control disease outbreaks, regardless of their health status. The court confirmed the CFIA’s approach, prioritizing trade obligations over the welfare of our animals.
In addition, we’ve been ordered to pay $15,000 in CFIA’s legal costs. You can read the full decision here: (2025 FC 878).

We are heartbroken by this outcome and uncertain about the future of our farm. As we navigate this incredibly difficult time, we ask for your patience and continued support. If you are able, please consider making a donation to help us manage the financial and emotional toll this has taken.
Thank you,
Universal Ostrich Farm

A note from me:
I first heard about the 400 Canadian Ostriches when they were scheduled to be killed on Feb. 1st. I started sharing their story and telling everyone I know about what was happening. I am sharing this blog in hopes that it touches your heart and you do whatever you can to help. Sending prayers and positive energy to Karen and Katie (owners of the farm) is HUGE! If you cannot do anything else, keep them in your prayers and surround the beautiful ostriches in the white light of protection.
Make sure to look into the eyes of these magnificent ostriches. This page will introduce you to some of the ostriches.

These ostriches have been on this farm with this family for 30 years. These ostriches have been shown, by scientific studying, to have strong immune systems. Maybe that is the reason then want to get rid of them, because they prove that strong immune systems will get over dis-eases. (In the interviews the owners of the farm explain how research with the ostriches can help understand strong immune systems.)
The authorities tested dead ostriches with PCR tests. Yes, the same worthless tests that do not show infection of anything. The family, because of laws, are not allowed to do their own testing.
These ostriches have been raised, cared for and loved by the family. They are like family to them. You can imagine how devastating this to them.
They asked the people to help and it worked!
Tuesday, when the Federal Courts decision was released, the Universal Ostrich Farm was asking for people to send email to landfill place that was going to accept the dead ostriches. Because of the outcry of people contacting them, they had a meeting and the outcome is below.
Today’s Announcement:
Unanimous Victory: 20 Directors, 400 Citizens, 400 Ostriches, One Clear Message
Today, all 20 RDCK Directors voted unanimously to require proper testing before accepting the 400 ostriches into any landfill. This is a huge win for transparency, animal welfare, and community oversight — and it happened because you showed up.
To everyone who packed the room, tuned in on Zoom, wrote letters, and rallied support: thank you. Your voices were respectful, informed, and powerful. You made it impossible to ignore this issue.
And to the Directors: your thoughtful leadership, willingness to listen, and united stance are deeply appreciated. You’ve demonstrated that local governance can be compassionate, science-informed, and accountable to the people it serves.
This is a proud moment for the Kootenay.
(But let’s stay tuned in. Now we need to ensure that the testing methods used are credible, transparent, and humane.)
Eyes open. Hearts engaged.
Because today proves it: when the community speaks, leadership listens.
What we can do:
Although the decision from the landfill company is great news, the order from the Federal Court System is still in place. Here is what we can do.

The latest news is that the local municipal council voted not to let carcasses be disposed of in their landfills. For an analysis of the Judge's Ruling from May 13, see https://canadianshareablenews.substack.com/p/csn-press-room-re-next-considerations... Two points might be of possible interest... the Exceptional Circumstances line mentioned by the judge. And the statement by a high level WOAH official that culls are not effective but socially unacceptable.
