Toxic Coating 'Apeel' Update - Flyer to Hand to your Grocery Store
I have created a downloadable flyer for you
Since May 8, 2023, I have written 10 Blogs about the toxic coating ‘Apeel’. There have been many companies that were going to use the coating on their produce but because of customer feedback, they have stated they will not use ‘Apeel’ on their produce.
I have created a two-page hand out with some information and links for everyone to print out and hand out to grocery stores they shop at and also to people to inform them about this toxic coating ‘Apeel’.
Here is the link to download the handout:

Toxic Coating ‘Apeel’ Update
April 29, 2025
By Chef Valerie Wilson (www.macroval.com)
Since May 8, 2023, I have written 10 Substack Blog posts about the toxic coating ‘Apeel’.
The toxic coating ‘Apeel’ was approved in early 2023 by the FDA to be sprayed on our vegetables and fruits. According to the creators of ‘Apeel’ it was invented to cover the produce to have a longer shelf life and to look fresher in the grocery stores. According to the creators of ‘Apeel’ it is made up of the waste material of vegetables and fruit. (You can look up the ‘Apeel’ website to see what the creators of this toxic coating have put there, however, I do not recommend hearing about this product from the people who plan on making a lot of money from this product.)
The FDA has written in their approval papers that this coating is ‘Generally Recognized as Safe’ or GRAS.
LINK TO THE FDA APPROVAL PAPER: https://www.fda.gov/media/135999/download
Here is a list from the FDA approval papers of what is in ‘Apeel’:
Contains: Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Palladium and Mercury
Contains: Citric Acid which is almost always derived from GMO corn
Contains: Soap, sodium oleate (yes, extra salt, sodium in your diet)
Contains: Ethyl acetate, a flavoring agent, used in solvents, paints, lacquers, perfumes and processed foods, which is toxic if ingested or inhaled
Heptane: Used in test fuels, petroleum refinements, cements and inks
Contains: Toluene, a highly toxic chemical with a wide range of detrimental health effects when inhaled, swallowed or when comes in contact with skin or eyes
Other terrible things about ‘Apeel’:
Countries selling produce coated with Apeel include the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Norway, China, Australia, South Africa, Poland, and Japan.
It cannot be washed off
No information campaign or consent was ever done, they just quietly started spraying our food with this toxic substance
Labeling laws vary from state to state and country to country
It is made from diglycerides of fatty acids, which means it contains trans fats
The ‘Apeel’ substance is going to be heated before putting on the produce, so if you are eating all raw, will your produce really be raw anymore? https://patents.google.com/patent/US9957215B2/en
The produce is also being ‘santized’ before the ‘Apeel’ is applied: https://patenent/US20170332650A1/ents.google.com/pat
Apeel describes how they apply voltage in their coating process. The goal is to turn the liquid spray into a polymer like wax or plastic: https://patents.google.com/patent/US10239069B2/en
The EPA papers on ‘Apeel’: Link: https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/ppls/092708-00001-20190607.pdf
EPA classifies ‘Apeel’ as a pesticide. The monoglycerides and diglycerides in Apeel are well-known trans fats. They are so harmful that a warning label is required on foods that contain them. If those ingredients were in food, the manufacturer must disclose them.
However, because this is a coating on the food rather than a food itself, they aren’t disclosing it.
EPA papers state: Organipeel, Active ingredients: Citric Acid, 1.66% By WT - Other ingredients: 99.34% By WT. - WHAT IS THE OTHER INGREDIENTS???
Robyn Openshaw, the Green Smoothie Girl, has done a lot of research on her website and has written blogs about the toxic coating ‘Apeel’ also.
Robyn’s Website: https://greensmoothiegirl.com/apeel-coating-cucumbers/
Stores and Companies that will NOT carry produce with ‘Apeel’: (as of June 2024)
Costco - The Good Earth - Better Health Stores - Kroger - Trader Joe’s - Sprouts Farmer’s Market - Natural Grocers - Publix - Bragg - Jimbo’s - H.E.B. - Driscoll’s only the finest Berries
What can you do? ASK YOUR GROCERY STORE IF THEY CARRY PRODUCE WITH ‘APEEL’!
Make copies of this flyer and give it to the produce manager of the stores you shop and also to everyone you know.
We vote with our money! Customer feedback has made a HUGE difference in what stores were going to use the toxic coating ‘Apeel’. Because of phone calls, emails and feedback from their customers, many companies and stores have come out with statements saying they will not sell produce with ‘Apeel’.
